Located near the northern city of La Serena, Valle Elqui can be a excellent 3 day tour. The towns of Coquimbo and La Serena are a full day's drive by car or bus. Driving allows you to see the countryside as it changes leaving the Central Valley, crossing the coastal mountains and entering the drier Norte Chico as the area is called. You can also fly if you want to spend more time in the area. On your drive up the lush green Valle Elqui you will pass small farms (Parcelas) on your way to the town of Valle Elqui which is the center for making pisco. After visiting the distillery, Solar de Pisco Elqui, and lunch you may want to stop in the town of Vicuña with its museum for Gabriela Mistral, one Chile's beloved poets.
